Facebook Social Plugins for WordPress: New Version Available

I am pleased to announce a new version of my Facebook Social Plugins WordPress plugin. You can now get the plugin from WordPress.org.

The new version introduces the use of XFBML, which is an improvement over iframes. You can expect more added features with XFBML in the future. However, to make it work, you will need to provide a Facebook application ID (which you can get here). If you don’t provide one, it will fall back to using iframes.

The new version also introduces 3 new widgets: Like Box, Comments and Recommendations. For more information and to see demos of the widgets, visit the plugin’s page.

    Hello…

I tried to install your plugin with wp version 2.9.2 and it said it could not activate because of this fatal error :

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' in /var/www/html/(…)/wp-content/plugins/facebook-social-plugins/socialplugins.php on line 53

I don't understand this error so maybe you have a clue ?

    Thanks !

Thanks for pointing out this problem. It seems you use PHP 4 (not 5) on your server, and I hadn't verified compatibility with PHP 4. I should have, since WordPress IS compatible with both PHP 4 and 5. The new 1.0.1 release fixes this problem and should now run fine for you.

    Get it here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/facebook-so…

    Thanks again!

Thank you, it now works flawlessly.

Is there an easy way to add the like button under each post on the index page ? Currently it displays on each post page but not on the main page…

    Hey Olivier,

Thanks for this plugin, it almost exactly does what I want it to be.
But I have a problem: The like button doesn't show up when my application ID is inserted. With iFrame it works just fine, but it's not a very pretty solution.

Another feature request is that you can hide the button on certain pages like. I'm doing this using display: none; at the moment, but it's not that pretty, too.

    Thanks, Nico

I echo MD's question – Great plugin, works flawlessly, now I want it to work on our main page, not just the individual :¬)

Thanks for your feedback! Next version will introduce much more control over where to display the Like button and this will include the choice to display it or not on the main page. There will also be options to display or hide it on tag, category and search results pages, as well as individual content pages. Look for that version coming soon!

    lameo here
I tried to get an facebook application id but says my url is not valid?

What am I doing wrong. Sorry I am such a lameo

Could it be the same problem as Sanitys above? When entering your blog's URL it needs to end with a / so you have to enter http://www.yourblog.com/ and not only http://www.yourblog.com. Facebook seems picky on that one! ;)

hi, i'm new to this.. please tell me where's the ever-elusive “/wp-content/plugins/ directory” where i can upload your directory? is it on facebook or on wordpress?

    Your Instructions:
    1. Extract and upload the directory to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory
    2. Activate the plugin through the 'Plugins' menu in WordPress

    I don't know how to start step1 :(
    thanks!

This is a directory within your WordPress installation, located on the server hosting your blog. You can generally access this using FTP.

A simpler method for you could be to install the plugin directly from your WordPress dashboard:

    - In the left menu, click on “Plugins” (the smaller one below the bigger one).
    - On that page, click “Add new”.
    - In the search box, enter “facebook social plugins” and click “Search plugins”.
    - You should get around 22 results and my plugin should be the second one. It's named exactly “Facebook Social Plugins”.
    - Click “Install now” and confirm by clicking OK.
    - The plugin will now be installed and on the next page, click “Activate Plugin”.

That's it! You can now visit the settings page named “FB Social Plugins” in the left menu.
